Home sales in Brooklyn, Queens rise as prices tumble

The number of sales jumped 20.4% in Brooklyn and 18.2% in Queens compared with early 2009, according to a report to be issued today by brokerage firm Prudential Douglas Elliman.
Pent-up demand and historically low interest rates lured more homebuyers into deals in Queens andBrooklynin the spring, but housing prices continued to tumble.

The hustle and bustle on Steinway Street in Astoria typically shows the staggering ethnic diversity of Queens.
Queens has been touted as a diverse borough that is home to immigrants from all over the globe, and a key component of New York City's melting pot.
But the sheer number of cultures represented by its 2.2 million residents truly sets the borough apart from the rest of the city and beyond, according to new figures released last week.
