Concert to Celebrate 130th Birthday!
A concert to celebrate a 130th Birthday? Yes! You are invited to a classical concert on March 27th to honor the life of Rosina Lhevinne (1880-1976); a gifted pianist, "teacher in the truest sense," wife, mother and world renowned performer who is interred at Maple Grove. If a teacher is defined by the success of her students then Rosina was very very accomplished! Her most famous students at the Juilliard School include Van Cliburn, John Williams, James Levine, Misha Dichter and John Browning. They will not be at her birthday celebration but you will enjoy the talents of three gifted classical musicians who will be playing her favorite Chopin. Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Stenhammar and Bartok pieces in the Celebration Room at the beautiful Center at Maple Grove (127-15 Kew Gardens Road, Kew Gardens)
Every "party" has refreshments and this one will begin with a wine and cheese reception at 7:00pm (Birthday Cake for dessert of course!). The concert will commence at 7:30pm.
On March 27th, we will also be celebrating Chopin's 200th Birthday Anniversary, joy, talent, our lovely guests, beautiful beautiful music and the loving "spirit" of Rosina Lhevinne. It will be a night to remember!

Party raises Haiti relief cash

Long after many shops shut their doors in the face of last week’s snowstorm, customers at one Kew Gardens restaurant thumbed their noses at the slippery streets and danced the night away at a fund-raiser for Haiti.
“This is a much better turnout than we thought there would be,” said Mandy Gor, a Kew Gardens resident who helped to organize last Thursday night’s event at Mood Restaurant and Lounge to raise money for Haitian relief efforts.
More than 60 people attended the event that ran past midnight and raised funds for a weeklong trip to Haiti by Gor and 14 others, who left Sunday. The individuals on the trip are part of Edeyo, a nonprofit that in 2007 opened a school in Bel Air, one of the poorest parts of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
They will provide medical support and distribute items like food and water to Haitians, including students at the school supported by Edeyo. To date, Kew Gardens resident Kevin Jamison, who also left for Haiti Sunday, said they had located 188 of the 250 students at the primary school and had confirmed 10 pupils died in the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 250,000 people.

Kew Gardens Haiti Fundraiser at Mood - 2/25 - TONIGHT!!!
It is not often that there is a social gathering which has the possibility to literally change and save peoples lives happening in Kew Gardens. Tonight will be one of those rare occasions. I am sure that many of the readers of this blog know that I have a history working with Haiti, and possibly even that I consider my first trip there in 1998 as the real catalyst to all that I have done in my life since then with international relations and global development issues. Now that this disaster has struck, it has made an almost intolerable situation a desperate and deadly one. These people are in more need now for our help than ever!
We have already sent one team down who hosted a week long medical clinic and saw countless patients, found and registered the mission students from our school, and since then we have created a main distribution point for the local community to receive medical attention, water and shelter.
When our team arrives on February 28, we will be kicking off a major food, water, medical clinic and supply distribution as well as working to secure a new building for the school to be housed either temporarily or permanently so we can get these children, who are sitting in the streets day after day with no food or activities, back into school as soon as possible. We will also be doing daily activities with the children with arts and crafts to get some smiles back on their faces.
We ask that ALL of you, please call your friends and family and get everyone out to Mood tonight for a fundraiser that will benefit this amazing country that is in desperate need right now. Put your snow boots on and come out starting at 9pm for live music and raffles and juts a great party! See more info below.

In the spirit of Edeyo, a Haitian-Creole word which means “Help Them” Mood Restaurant and Lounge (120-29 83rd Avenue, Kew Gardens) will sponsor a Kew Gardens HAITIAN RECOVERY FUNDRAISER on Thursday, February 25th. From 9:00pm-midnight, the kitchen will be closed; the bar open and the restaurant will be full of music, the sounds of friends enjoying $3 and $5 drink specials and a fabulous raffle! The performers; singers, songwriters, guitar instrumentalists and a three piece musical group have all appeared in several Queens and Manhattan venues and are favorites in the Kew Gardens area. The evening’s music will range from folk, to rock, to jazz and will include performances by Melissa Jillian Corona, Bobby Day, Peter Hack, Erin Lee Kelly, Stacee Mandeville and Howie Sydell. There will be a $20 donation at the door and 100% of the evening’s substantial proceeds will go directly to the Edeyo Foundation.

In 2007, Edeyo opened the doors of its newly-renovated school in Bel Air, one of the poorest shantytowns of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince to its first group of students. Within months, it was providing free education and a daily meal to 300 girls and boys. The 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12 destroyed Edeyo’s school. All of the teachers have been accounted for but efforts continue to find unaccounted for children and their families. Edeyo is now working to rebuild and find ways to support the children and their families and as they do so; to continue--and improve--their educational programs; and to introduce mental health programs to help these families cope with the trauma they have experienced.
On February 2 and 28, Edeyo will send crews to Bel Air (the first non-profit aid group to arrive there) to do immediate assessment, offer support, rebuild the school and deliver monetary donations and supplies. Andrew Cuomo issued a letter to Mr. Rubler's Vantage Properties announcing that the attorney general plans to sue the company for harrassing tenants to create vacancies. "Vantage aggressively attempted to force out long-term tenants by serving baseless legal notices and commencing frivolous Housing Court eviction proceedings," wrote Mr. Cuomo. Art Showcase and Reception at Ascend Day Spa

The Ascend Day Spa, located at 82-62 Austin Street, in Kew Gardens, Queens, will be exhibiting artwork from local artists in an effort to give back to the community. The Ascend Day Spa is an all natural green spa, focusing on mind and body wellness through relaxation and rejuvenation. Continuing the exhibition series, Ascend is offering its space for a selection of works by photographer Marcelino Pagan; the opening reception will be on Friday, February 5th, 2010, at 8:00 pm. The exhibition will be on view through April 2nd, 2010 during business hours.
Marcelino Pagan is a self-taught photographer with over 25 years of experience with traditional and digital photography. His work includes black and white and color documentary photographs, profiles, and abstract art. Marcelino has studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, NY.
Currently, Marcelino is working on several bodies of work. They include Underground Music, a photographic documentary of musicians who perform in New York City’s subway stations; andElements of Light, Shadow, and Texture, abstract digital color photographs of everyday objects exploring variations in lighting and shadow. Marcelino has displayed his work at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, in New York City, in June 2009 and at the 2008 and 2009 Boricua Festivals held in Brooklyn, NY.
Marcelino Pagan is passionate about doing his photography and passing on his knowledge and experience to others.

A Note on My Ex-Favorite Pizza Spot in Kew Gardens
Several days before Christmas I was about to drive down to Virginia to see my family. They have been here before and loved Dani's pizza and asked me to grab a pie and bring it down with me. So, at noon on Wednesday December 23rd, I went in to Dani's to get what my family asked for. They weren't open yet and several of the employees were carrying boxes and food, etc from their basement to the front door so I stood there patiently, opening the door for each guy coming through for a good 20 minutes. I left to run another errand and came back 20 minutes later. There were three people there eating slices, there were 8 cooked, full size pies on the rack and two full sized out behind the glass. I told the pizza maker that I need one full sized pie to bring to my family in Virginia and he refused! He said he was too busy and that I could only have 4 slices because it was $1.25 per slice Wednesday. I told him I would pay full price and he stated he was "too busy" and would not give me one of the ten full sized pies there and was quite rude about the whole thing. Anyway, I have not had Dani's since and although I miss it, I will try to not support them if they believe they can treat their customers like trash.... The Pizza is good, but isn't that good!

Fire in Kew Gardens apartment building
MYFOXNY.COM - Several units in an apartment building in Queens were destroyed in a fast-moving fire on Monday afternoon.
SkyFoxHD was over the building at 84-70 129th Street as firefighters rummaged through debris.
Several windows were blown out.
Fire officials say the blaze in the Kew Gardens section of the borough broke out at around Noon.
There were no serious injuries.

Kew Gardens Yoga
Welcome to the new year! Even if you don't do new years resolutions there's no getting around the feeling that January offers the chance for a fresh start. It's common to find that during the holidays we get so busy that our healthy habits are pushed aside. The new year is a perfect time to re-invest in our healthier routines. A great place to start is with a yoga practice. People come to yoga for different reasons. Most are looking for a way to improve their health. Others are interested in effective tools to manage stress. Still others seek personal and spiritual growth. Yoga offers all of these things. It's a practice that revitalizes the body, calms the mind, and deepens self-awareness.
I recently tracked down a bundle of missing waivers. Here is an update for those of you who have been missing out on email. Throughout the winter months we have continued the community park class indoors at Living Yoga studio. Located 11720 Queens blvd, Forest Hills (2nd floor above the bank of America) In addition to the Saturday morning class (10:00am-11:00am) We have added a Wednesday evening session from 6:00-7:00pm. Both classes run at $8.

Kew Gardens Block Gets Improvement Grant
Thanks to Rosemary Sherman from the Kew Gardens Improvement Association who applied for a Love Your (NYC) Block Grant last month and found out recently that her hard work paid off! With the help of $500, several NYC agencies, and community volunteers, the block from L'Angolo Pizza to Golden Fountain Chinese Restaurant and across the street from Duncan Donuts to TD Bank will be going through a "renaissance." The timeline of activities will be developed over the next months and most activities will be scheduled for the Spring.
The mission of the project is to make the block greener and more attractive by planting annuals and perennials and by planting two above ground large trees in containers, to improve and maintain the cleanliness of the block by working with NYC Department of Sanitation (we asked for some new trash receptacles and graffitti removal), to develop a spirit of pride and ownership (new metal signs by treewells of stores who are caring for "gardens") and community education/activities. Residents and business owners will work together to improve, beautify and maintain the appearance of our block. A Spring Clean Up and Planting Day ( LOVE YOUR Kew Gardens BLOCK DAY!) will be planned.
What's special about this grant is that besides the $500 awarded we will be directly linked to several city agencies whose help will be instrumental in revitalizing and transforming the block. We have not gone to the Orientation meetings yet and do not know all that is being offered by the City Agencies. Will have more info after January 13.

Coldest day of Winter 09/10 - No Heat or Hot water from 5pm yesterday and counting
See below post from several weeks ago... This is crazy! I'm freezing!!!!!!!!
No Heat, No Hot Water...No Super....No Landlord.... that's Vantage Management!
Good ol' Vantage Management has gone and done it again, and again, and again. No heat all last night. Now its 8:30 am, been trying to have a shower since 6:30am but no hot water. I go down to tell the super, and ohh, he's in Poland and the porter can't do anything. I call Vantage's "24 hour maintenance hotline" to report the problem and the man on the line, that answered "security" tells me that the super knows about the problem. Hmm, did you call him in Poland and is he hopping a flight back as we speak? ....This is about the 10th time this has happened in the last month or so. (Last year it happened countless times) Obviously it is not being fixed and DOB does nothing. I just don't get how this company can get so many things wrong so much of the time.......

Friends of Maple Grove Workshop on the Egyptian Ushabti
Some photos taken during the first Friends of Maple Grove Workshop on the Egyptian Ushabti event. Small figures were made and the ancient history of this fascinating funerary object was discussed. It became very creative and the setup was great.
Next a basket of ready made Ushabtis will be available to the public with markers and directions so they can inscribe it with the name of a loved one and place on the MG Holiday tree. This was inspired by the Origami Holdiay Tree atthe Museum of Natural History.
