Happy Cinco de Mayo!

!Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Just as a reminder - today is NOT Mexico's Independence day. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican Army's defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. (Hence the poblano pepper above, originating from Puebla, which seems like a more fitting icon than a sombrero) Since we are definitely lacking in serious Mexican restaurants around here, here is a short list of things to do tonight for the Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

Tu Casa Restaurant will be having a DJ, beers 5 for $20, free tequilas shots all night, the Corona models will be coming by, dinner and food specials and giveaways! I have eaten there and can say it is great food and an awesome atmosphere.

Cocina Latina is hosting its one year anniversary sponsored by Presidente Light Cinco de Mayo bash with live music, a DJ, and drink specials. Haven't eaten here but it has gotten good reviews and the atmosphere is pretty cool.

5 burro Cafe who I thought would have something happening told me that it is just regular specials tonight.  Good stuff.

Garcia's, or Sgt. Garcia's as they are seemingly listed, told me they were too busy to tell me what they had going on tonight. I told them I was offering free advertising for their Cinco de Mayo events, and the manager repeated to me that he is "too busy" to tell me.  strange place..

You can also always go over to Roosevelt avenue in Woodside and Jackson Heights, between 61st street and 94th street, where there about 40 Mexican restaurants and bars, all really original.

  1. Picked up some food at Tu Casa (the pernil is still on point!) and took a tequila shot as an appetizer

Well done Tu Casa! You know how to celebrate.

As for Garcia's, owners must have their heads up their butts
